Singles out Oliver Skipp for praise after 2-0 win over Brentford

Tottenham recorded a dominant 2-0 win over Brentford as Antonio Conte made it three games unbeaten in the Premier League on Thursday.

Spurs took the lead in their first top-flight meeting with Brentford in fortuitous fashion as Sergio Canos deflected into his own net after 12 minutes, the Bees’ first ever own goal in the competition.

Thomas Frank’s side did not manage a shot on target until the 63rd minute, though that proved in vain when Son Heung-Min doubled the lead two minutes later.

Conte’s side – who are unbeaten in 12 matches against London rivals Brentford in all competitions, dating back to 1948 – move up to sixth and are within touching distance of the top four.

Alvaro Fernandez denied Lucas Moura in the opening stages, but Spurs were soon ahead when Pontus Jansson headed Son’s cross against team-mate Canos, who turned into his own net by no fault of his own.

Bryan Mbeumo responded by sending a speculative long-range volley wide before Sergio Reguilon looped a header off target and Fernandez pushed Son’s low effort away.

Harry Kane raced through one-on-one after the interval but was thwarted by Fernandez, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg inexplicably prodded wide following the England captain’s low delivery.

Ivan Toney then drilled tamely into Hugo Lloris’ hands before Spurs doubled their advantage as Son tapped in Reguilon’s cross to cap an expert counter-attack started by Kane.

Frank’s side rarely troubled Spurs’ goal in the closing stages as Conte oversaw his second league victory in as many games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

United announce shock Michael Carrick exit after 3-2 win over Arsenal

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player in football history to score 800 official goals as Manchester United claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford on Friday morning AEDT in Michael Carrick’s last match as caretaker boss.

The game got off to an inauspicious start for United when they conceded one of the most bizarre Premier League goals in history; David De Gea stayed down after being stood on by Fred and Emile Smith Rowe was able to find the bottom corner of an empty net before referee Martin Atkinson blew his whistle.

On Matchday Live on Optus Sport, legends Ian Wright and Paul Scholes agreed it was ‘embarrassing’ for De Gea, who should have gotten to his feet to prevent the goal.

However, the Red Devils recovered and went into the break level after Fred atoned by teeing up Bruno Fernandes.

From there, Ronaldo came to the fore, slotting his 800th career goal after Diogo Dalot linked up with Marcus Rashford down the right on his return to the starting XI after being benched against Chelsea.

Martin Odegaard pulled one back for the Gunners, but ended up costing them the match with a clumsy challenge on Fred allowing Ronaldo to step up and score the winner from the penalty spot in the 70th minute.

“A really good win. I don’t think we saw anything different from them really when you look back at the last four or five weeks but it is a win nonetheless,” United icon Scholes said on Matchday Live on Optus Sport.

You’ve seen now why Cristiano has to play.
“Ok, he didn’t have big influences in the (Manchester) City game or the Liverpool game, he was a sub at Chelsea but if he gets a chance he is going to score goals.

“It was funny tonight, when he came out it looked like he made it his mission to score a goal. He wasn’t passing the ball, he was shooting at every opportunity. A really good win, but not a vintage Manchester United performance.”
